Lead crop
Alfalfa is the core forage. It is a perennial. It is cut repeatedly. It is feed — protein, fiber, and energy for dairy, beef, and horses, and from there milk, cheese, and beef.
UC Cooperative Extension describes Imperial Valley alfalfa as a crop typically taken in seven to nine cuttings a year. That is what a long desert season is for.

Warm-season grass hay that belongs in this valley. Bermuda is forage in its own right and one of the crops Imperial Irrigation District names in its deficit-irrigation conservation program.
A summer forage that fits the Imperial Valley calendar. We grow it as part of the same hay program — planted, cut, handled, and stacked to the same standard as the rest of the forage.
Another low-desert forage grass. Like alfalfa and Bermuda, Klein can sit out a midsummer irrigation window when growers enroll in IID’s voluntary conservation program. We grow it as hay, not as a talking point.
The mix changes with the year and the ground. Other rotational forage and field crops run alongside the hay. Ask us what is in a specific field.
AMC’s hay work is the whole job: field production, harvest, handling, storage, and delivery. The season here does not pause for a Midwestern winter. That is an advantage only if the cutting, drying, and stacking keep up with it.
Onions, melons, and corn are part of the wider rotation. They are not the lead. Custom growing and tillage are available when a partner needs a crew on their ground.
